- Joseph Smith Historic Properties. The Joseph Smith Mansion House was constructed by Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS movement. In 1918, Joseph Smith’s grandson deeded the house to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
- Cultural Hall. You can experience the social life of old Nauvoo in the evening here, it’s the best place to be after the sun goes down. There is a play performed by local artists in the hall called ‘Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo.’

The history of Nauvoo, Illinois, starts with the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes who frequented the area, on a bend of the Mississippi River in Hancock County, some 53 miles (85 km) north of today's Quincy. They called the area " Quashquema ", in honor of the Native American chief who headed a Sauk and Fox settlement numbering nearly 500 lodges.

- Trace Joseph Smith’s Past. Smith first established the town in 1839 after he and his church were run out of nearby Missouri. Much of the area was swampy, but Smith organized his followers (also known as Mormons) to dig a massive canal, which drained the water and allowed them to build homes, homes, shops, schools, and the group’s temple.
- Take In The Temple. While the temple you’ll see in Nauvoo today is certainly grand — built into a bluff overlooking both the river and the town — it is not the original.
- Experience 1840s Life. While Nauvoo was clearly heavily influenced by the Mormons, there were other settlers in this area as well. To get an overarching idea of what life was like here during the town’s boom days, head to the Rheinberger Museum, located in Nauvoo State Park.
