Sep 26, 2023 · Updated September 26, 2023. The town of Nazareth is mentioned in the New Testament Gospel accounts and the book of Acts. What makes Nazareth significant is that, as Scripture tells, it was the childhood hometown of Jesus. Jesus certainly made this otherwise unimportant village highly significant.
A city in Galilee, the home of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. About halfway between the S end of the Sea of Galilee and Mt. Carmel is the town of Nazareth. Important as it may seem to have been in the NT the town is not mentioned in the OT, the Talmud, or by the historian Josephus.
Nazareth is famous for one thing, and one thing only: it is the home town of Jesus. It was here that Jesus spent his boyhood, living with his mother and father, and here that he faced the sceptical townsfolk of Nazareth. The village seems to have been held in some contempt in 1st century Palestine.

Nazareth (Heb. נָצְרַת) is the largest Arab city in Israel with a population of some 60,000, of whom an estimated 30-35 percent are Christians. Nazareth is mentioned several times in the New Testament as the home to which Mary and Joseph, her husband, returned with the child from Egypt and where Jesus was brought up ( Matt. 2:23; Luke 2:39, 51 ).
