Neda Backman was born in Iran but came to Sweden as a child. She grew up with a dad who was a director, and studied film herself, but made her own career in the sales industry of radio and cinema. In 2017 she took over management of her husband Fredrik Backman's career and started her own production company "Neda Production".

Fredrik Backman married Neda Shafti Backman in 2009. They have two children. His second book, Things My Son Needs to Know about the World (2012), was based on his own experiences with parenting.
