He won a Grammy Award for the song "African Waltz" in 1960. His most-successful musicals were Hair (1967; its cast album also won a Grammy) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971).

  8. Galt MacDermot was born December 18th, 1928 in Montreal and received his bachelor’s degree in music from South Africa’s Cape Town University. Three years after moving to New York in 1964, jazz critic and music publisher Nat Shapiro introduced MacDermot to Gerome Ragni and Jim Rado, actors who had just written a provocative play entitled Hair.
