Nicholas Longworth III was an American lawyer and politician who became Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. A Republican, he was elected to the Ohio Senate, where he initiated the successful Longworth Act of 1902, regulating the issuance of municipal bonds.
Nicholas Longworth is best remembered, insofar as he is remembered at all, as the father of American winemaking. Longworth popularized the Catawba grape and created a widespread, if short-lived, enthusiasm for the sparkling wines of the Ohio River Valley.

On Oct. 11, 1881, he was elected a judge of the Supreme Court of Ohio. Commencing his duties on Nov. 9, 1881, he resigned on March 9, 1883 to manage the business and financial affairs of the Longworth estate due to the ill health of his father.
