Nicolaus Copernicus, Polish Mikołaj Kopernik, (born Feb. 19, 1473, Toruń, Pol.—died May 24, 1543, Frauenburg, East Prussia), Polish astronomer. He was educated at Kraków, Bologna, and Padua, where he mastered all the knowledge of the day in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and theology.
