Small-town writer Gaylord Esterbrook (James Stewart) makes it on Broadway when he writes a humorous play about wealthy socialites. There, he eventually marries the play's star, Linda Paige (Rosalind Russell), and pens several more popular comedies. However, things change drastically for Gaylord when he meets upper-class seductress Amanda Swift (Genevieve Tobin).
