Apr 15, 2024 · Olathe, city, seat (1858) of Johnson county, northeastern Kansas, U.S. Olathe, which lies 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Kansas City, was founded in 1857 on the Santa Fe Trail. Its name derives from the Shawnee Indian word for “beautiful.” The town was raided by the guerrilla leader William C.
Olathe, Kansas, the county seat of Johnson County, is located very near the county’s geographical center. In the spring of 1857, the survey of the Shawnee Indian lands was followed closely by land speculators, among whom was Dr. John T. Barton. Riding to the center of Johnson County, Barton staked two-quarter sections of land as a townsite.
