Shortly before the American invasion force embarked for Normandy on June 6, 1944, Gen. Omar Bradley, assigned to command 12th Army Group, convened his corps and division commanders at Bristol for a final review.
Omar Bradley was promoted to the rank of General of the Army on 22 September 1950. He was the only Chairman to attain five-star rank. His tenure as Chairman ended on 15 August 1953, three weeks after the Korean armistice. As a five-star general, however, he did not retire.
Omar Nelson Bradley was born in Clark, Missouri, on 12 February 1893. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1915, was commissioned a second lieutenant, and assigned to the 14th Infantry. In 1916, he married Mary Quayle and was promoted to first lieutenant. From 1915 to 1919, he performed troop duty in the West.
