Paisley Abbey was founded, as a priory, possibly on the site of St Mirin’s earlier church, in 1163 by Walter Fitzalan (c.1110-1177), the hereditary steward of Scotland. Monks came from the Cluniac priory of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. One of their number Osbert became the first prior.
