Paolo Emanuele Borsellino (Italian pronunciation: [ˈpaːolo borselˈliːno]; Sicilian: Pàulu Borsellino; 19 January 1940 – 19 July 1992) was an Italian judge and prosecuting magistrate. From his office in the Palace of Justice in Palermo , Sicily, he spent most of his professional life trying to overthrow the power of the Sicilian Mafia .

Paolo Borsellino was killed a short time later, on July 19, by a car bomb in Via D'Amelio, the street where Borsellino's mother lived. The bomb attack also claimed the lives of five policemen: Agostino Catalano, Walter Cosina, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Claudio Traina.
