He won three Cy Young Awards and was a member of the World Series-winning Boston Red Sox team in 2004. In 2007 he became the 15th pitcher in major league history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.
In 1997, Martínez went 17-8 with a National League-best 1.90 earned-run average and 13 complete games, striking out 305 batters en route to his first Cy Young Award. His combination of a 97-mph fastball, devastating change-up and pinpoint control made Martínez nearly unhittable.

Besides winning those aforementioned Cy Young Awards, he led the Major Leagues in ERA five times and strikeouts in the American League three times.
