May 14, 2024 · After hearing Strayhorn perform “Lush Life”, Nat King Cole recorded the song in 1949 with an exotic-sounding arrangement by Pete Rugolo. Despite the wonderful vocals, Strayhorn hated the version of the song and wasn’t motivated to do much more arrangement-wise, at least for full orchestras.

May 7, 2024 · I kind of was but not quite. My mom used to have "Something Cool" June Christie who sang Kenton, made records with great Pete Rugolo arrangements. There's a Freshman connection. I cleaned that album and it broke. She didn't mind. I had it on CD myself and she still likes it. Time goes by far too quickly.
