Along with his father Heinrich Parler, he is one of the most prominent and influential craftsmen of the Middle ages. He was born into a family of stonecutters and architects, whose last name is derived from the word parlier (German for stonecutter). Not many details are known from his early life, but it is known that he learned his trade in the family workshop.
