Peter Tonkinson was a writer and storyline editor for Granada Television. He worked on the continuing drama Coronation Street from the late 1970s until about 1986. Tonkinson developed famous storylines including the Ken, Mike and Deidre love triangle.

Peter Tonkinson wrote an episode of Coronation Street in January 1968, another in March 1977, and eight more between October 1983 and September 1986, one of them co-written with H.V. Kershaw, making 10 in total. His main contribution though was as a long term storyliner for the programme for thirteen years in sixteen separate stints:

•Episode 1540 (20th October 1975) to Episode 1655 (24th November 1976)
