Petroglyph National Monument protects a variety of cultural and natural resources including five volcanic cones, hundreds of archeological sites and an estimated 24,000 petroglyph images carved by Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers.
As the name suggest, Petroglyph National Monument preserves petroglyphs carved in the rock. If you enjoy hiking, this is a great site. If you don't, this is probably not the site for you, as hiking is pretty much the only activity at the site and the only way to view the petroglyphs.
Mar 20, 2021 · Petroglyphs are rock carvings (rock paintings are called pictographs) made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammerstone. When the desert varnish (or patina) on the surface of the rock was chipped off, the lighter rock underneath was exposed, creating the petroglyph.
