Phil Karlson (born Philip N. Karlstein; July 2, 1908 – December 12, 1982) was an American film director. Later noted as a film noir specialist, Karlson directed 99 River Street, Kansas City Confidential and Hell's Island, all with actor John Payne, in the early 1950s.

Phil Karlson was an American director who was best known for his film noirs of the 1950s. While studying law at Loyola Marymount University in California, Karlson took a job at Universal in the props department. He soon focused on a career in Hollywood, and in the early 1930s he became an assistant.
