After the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, many refugees fled to Oakland and Piedmont. Oakland began to annex land and threatened to annex Piedmont. In January of 1907, Piedmont residents voted to become a city, and on January 31, 1907, Piedmont was officially recognized as a municipality by the State of California.
The founding of Piedmont, California In 1820, today's Piedmont was called “Rancho San Antonio” and remained there until 1842 when Don Peralta divided his ranch between his four sons. The site that Piedmont now occupies was included in the portions belonging to Jose Domingo and Viciente Peralta and stayed that way until squatters took over.
In April 1877, James Gamble bought a 350-acre (1.4 km 2) tract of land from Blair, and formed the Piedmont Land Company, along with James deFremery, George W. Beaver, L.A. Booth, and T.L. Barker. The Piedmont Land Company hired landscape engineer William Hammond Hall to plan the avenues and subdivide the tract into 67 parcels.
