After his mistress had been banished to Stolpen Castle, the prince elector had the Hillside and Riverside Palace built according to Poeppelmann’s plans. This is where Saxon rulers resided in summer, given its picturesque location in the Elbe Valley with its vineyards.
Schloss Pillnitz is an impressive summer residence for the royals of Saxony, set in extensive parkland with some beautiful gardens. There are some good exhibitions in the buildings (we particularly liked the castle's old kitchen), but the setting and gardens were the main attraction for us.

Strolling through the verdant maze of hedges and flower-beds is a favorite pastime of locals and tourists alike. The park is quite large, 28 hectares all in all, and home to many smaller and larger sights.
