A pit pony, otherwise known as a mining horse, was a horse, pony or mule commonly used underground in mines from the mid-18th until the mid-20th century. The term "pony" was sometimes broadly applied to any equine working underground.
Pit Pony is a drama family history series that follows the McLean/Hall family in Nova Scotia in the early 1900s and their involvement in the coal industry. Young Willie enters the mines after his father's death and forms an attachment to the horses who work below-ground.
