Place de la Republique, which borders the 3rd, 10th and 11th districts is one of the largest squares of the capital at more than 33,000 square meters. It is located at the site occupied in the 14th century by the stronghold of Charles V's Porte du Temple enclosure.

This enormous Place was created by the urban renewal of Haussmann in the mid 19th Century. It is where several major boulevards come together with a huge statue/fountain in the center. Theaters and a neighborhood were torn down to create it. Today it can be the focal point of demonstrations.
