Pope Gregory IV (Latin: Gregorius IV; died 25 January 844) was the bishop of Rome and ruler of the Papal States from October 827 to his death. His pontificate was notable for the papacy’s attempts to intervene in the quarrels between Emperor Louis the Pious and his sons.

Cardinal priest of St. Mark’s Basilica, Rome, he succeeded Valentine as pope and is chiefly remembered for his mediation in the Carolingian dynastic struggle between Lothar I, the co-emperor, and the emperor Louis the Pious, when his father Louis granted.

Pope Gregory IV was the 101st pope and the fourth to use the name Gregory, which he adapted from his birth name. He was pope for more than 16 years and known for intervening in feuds between Louis the Pious and his family. This article looks at those feuds and some of his other accomplishments.

GREGORY IV, POPE Pontificate: Sept. 827 to Jan. 25, 844. A native Roman, he was cardinal priest of St. Mark's at the time of his election. His consecration (March 29, 828?) was delayed until a missus of louis the pious had reviewed the election in accord with the Constitutio Romana of 824 (see eugene ii, pope).
