Primas Germaniae is a historical title of honor for the most important Catholic bishop (the Primate) in the German lands. Throughout the history of the Holy Roman Empire, it was claimed by the Archbishops of Mainz, Trier, Magdeburg and Salzburg alike.

Feb 23, 2024 · The archbishops of Salzburg still hold the historic title of "Primas Germaniae". This is no longer associated with a canonical, but rather a liturgical primacy of honour. The title was initially held by the Bishop of Magdeburg. After the Peace of Westphalia (1648), when Magdeburg became Protestant, it was transferred to Salzburg.

The Archbishop of Salzburg is permitted to use a number of quite extraordinary titles and enjoys a very special status within the Catholic Church. As primas germaniae (since 1648) and legatus natus (since 1179), he is one of the church’s most important dignitaries outside the Vatican.
Primas, der. Lat. prima = "das Erste, das Beste"; pl. primates; Ehrentitel für den Bischof des Hauptsitzes in einem Land. Für den deutschsprachigen Teil der katholischen Kirche trägt der Erzbischof von Salzburg seit 1648 den Titel "Primas Germaniae", vor ihm war es der Erzbischof von Magdeburg.
