Prince Octavius of Great Britain (23 February 1779 – 3 May 1783) was the thirteenth child and eighth son of King George III and his queen consort, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Six months after the death of his younger brother Prince Alfred, Octavius was inoculated against the smallpox virus. Several days later, he became ill.

Prince Octavius, the thirteenth child of George III and Queen Charlotte, died in 1783, a year after his younger brother’s death. The King and Queen commissioned Benjamin West to commemorate the deaths of their youngest two sons in this painting which hung in the King’s Dressing-Room at Buckingham Palace.
