Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (7 January 1796 – 6 November 1817) was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (later George IV), and Caroline of Brunswick. She was expected to ascend the British throne after the deaths of her grandfather, George III, and her father, but died in childbirth at the age of 21, predeceasing them both.
Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796-1817) was the original ‘people’s princess.’. As heir to the throne of George III, Charlotte was seen as the hope of the nation. Following her marriage in 1816 to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, the couple settled into happy married life at Claremont.

Had Charlotte outlived her father and her grandfather, she would have become Queen, but she died following childbirth at the age of 21.
The royal baby’s namesake, Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796–1817), is the subject of two portraits by the English artist George Dawe (1781–1829), whose impressive body of work, alternately classically learned, powerfully romantic and regally splendid, is excellently represented in the collection.
Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817) c.1816-18 Description Having begun life as a mezzotint engraver, George Dawe was much employed as a painter by Prince Leopold both during his marriage (1816-7) and after; he worked also for the Duke and Duchess of Kent.
