Private Number is a 1936 American drama film directed by Roy Del Ruth and starring Loretta Young, Robert Taylor and Basil Rathbone. Sometimes known by the alternative title of Secret Interlude, the film was based on the play Common Clay by Cleves Kinkead which had previously been made into a film of the same name in 1930.

Private Number is based on a 1914 play originally called Hush Money, a title that was quickly changed to Common Clay. On Broadway, the lead role was played by Jane Cowl, a renowned stage actress who was also a playwright ( Smilin' Through ) and who acted in a few Hollywood films.
Summaries. A maid secretly marries the son of her wealthy boss. A young woman searching for work takes a job as a maid for a rich family. Intrigue follows as a butler schemes to make the attractive newcomer his own. Only to be foiled by the wealthy son's attraction to her.
