Its words and roots are not directly attested in any written works, but have been reconstructed through the comparative method, which finds regular similarities between languages that cannot be explained by coincidence or word-borrowing, and extrapolates ancient forms from these similarities.
Afroasiatic ( Afro-Asiatic ), also known as Afrasian and in older sources as Hamito-Semitic ( Chamito-Semitic) [3] or Semito-Hamitic, [4] is a large language family of about 300 languages. [5] It includes languages spoken predominantly in West Asia, North Africa, the Horn of Africa and parts of the Sahel .
The split between proto-Cushitic and proto-Omotic began by the fourth or fifth millennium BCE, and proto-Semitic separated to Asia Minor. Inconclusive research suggests the Afroasiatic superfamily began to diffuse by 13,000 BCE, a period of Omotic slight migration southward.
