The British colony of New York is divided into ten counties, one of which is Queens which included all of current Nassau County. 1790. First U.S. Census taken: Queens County has 5,393 total population, including 1,095 slaves. 1827. Slavery becomes illegal in New York State on July 4th, although most slaves have been manumitted by this time. 1854.
Queens is the fourth-most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States; and if each New York City borough were an independent city, Queens would also be the nation's fourth most populous city, after Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn.
