Synopsis. Carl Hostrup (Robert Mitchum), an apparently successful businessman, returns alone to his high-rise Chicago condo and opens a beer. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he retrieves a revolver from his nightstand, loads one round, and starts to put the gun to his temple. He briefly hesitates and returns the gun to the drawer.
