Sunnyvista is the fifth album by Richard and Linda Thompson, released in 1979, by Chrysalis Records. [1] After the artistic mismatch of the previous year's comeback album, First Light, the Thompsons made greater use on this album of backing musicians with whom they had previously worked.

After their 1979 album Sunnyvista had sold poorly, Richard and Linda Thompson found themselves without a record deal. In the spring of 1980 they toured as the support act for Gerry Rafferty and in June of that year they recorded some demo tracks at Woodworm Studios in Oxfordshire.

Sep 8, 2020 · Richard and Linda’s contract with Chrysalis was not renewed after Sunnyvista’s failure to make commercial headway and, after the Gerry Rafferty production conflicts, a new version of the album was recorded under the auspices of the former Fairport mentor Joe Boyd and issued as the first product of Joe’s new Hannibal label in March 1982.
Gerry Rafferty had booked the Thompsons as the support act for his 1980 tour, and had also used Richard as a session player on his Night Owl album. Rafferty offered to finance the recording of a new Richard and Linda Thompson album which he would then use to secure a contract for the Thompsons.
