Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, 6th Earl of Salisbury KG (22 November 1428 – 14 April 1471), known as Warwick the Kingmaker, was an English nobleman, administrator, landowner of the House of Neville fortune and military commander.
Apr 15, 2024 · Richard Neville, 16th earl of Warwick was an English nobleman called, since the 16th century, “the Kingmaker,” in reference to his role as arbiter of royal power during the first half of the Wars of the Roses (1455–85) between the houses of Lancaster and York. He obtained the crown for the Yorkist.
The First Battle of St. Albans was the first battle of the Wars of the Roses. Richard, 16th Earl of Warwick, played a pivotal role in it. Warwick led his men through the back streets and alleyways of St. Albans. In doing so he breached the defences of the Kings army. This led to a chaotic scene.
He was born Richard Neville on 22nd November 1428, the eldest son of the 5th Earl of Salisbury. He later acquired the title 16th Earl of Warwick through his advantageous marriage to Lady Anne Beauchamp, Countess of Warwick, daughter of Richard Beauchamp, the 13th Earl of Warwick.
1. His marriage made him very powerful. Whilst still a boy, Richard Neville was betrothed to Anne, daughter of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. When her brother’s daughter died in 1449, Anne – as the only sister – brought her husband the title and chief share of the Warwick estates.
