Sir Richard Owen KCB FRMS FRS (20 July 1804 – 18 December 1892) was an English biologist, comparative anatomist and paleontologist.Despite being a controversial figure, Owen is generally considered to have been an outstanding naturalist with a remarkable gift for interpreting fossils.
Richard Owen, British anatomist and paleontologist who is remembered for his contributions to the study of fossil animals, especially dinosaurs. He was the first to recognize them as different from today’s reptiles. Owen was also noted for his strong opposition to the views of Charles Darwin.

Richard Dale Owen, the youngest son of Ann (or Anne) Caroline Dale and Robert Owen, was born on January 6, 1810, in Lanarkshire, Scotland.   Owen's Welsh-born father was a philanthropist and successful textile manufacturer in New Lanark , Scotland, who became a noted social reformer.

During his apprenticeship, Owen gained experience in post mortems at the local prison, which led to an interest in anatomy.

Dr. Owen is a psychiatrist with expertise in psychopharmacology and implementation of evidence-based practices in mental health. He completed a clinical research fellowship in the Clinical Neuroscience Branch and the Experimental Therapeutics Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the first psychiatrist to receive a career development award from the VA Health Services Research & Development Service (HSR&D). Throughout his career, Dr. Owen’s research has focused on assessing and improving quality of care for schizophrenia, depression, and other mental health disorders. He has developed and tested interventions to implement medication management recommendations of clinical practice guidelines for schizophrenia. This work has recently focused on improving monitoring and management for metabolic side effects of antipsychotics, studying strategies to change provider and organizational behavior.
