Located on the banks of the Rock River, Rockford has a rich cultural history thanks to the immigration of various people in the early 19th and 20th centuries like the Irish, Swedish, African-American, Polish, Italian, etc.
Rockford, Illinois, was first settled in 1834-1835 by Germanicus Kent, Thatcher Blake, and Lewis Lemon, who came from Galena and established themselves on the west bank of Rock River; and Daniel Shaw Haight, who founded a settlement on the east bank. (Lemon, a slave, later bought his freedom, but stayed in the area as a truck farmer.)
Located in far northern part of the state on the banks of the Rock River, Rockford is the county seat of Winnebago County. The most-populous Illinois city outside of the Chicago metropolitan area, the city is the fifth-largest city in Illinois and the 171st-most populous in the U.S.
