In honor of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, IGN is taking a look back at some of the iconic characters who've fallen along the way, and the lasting impact they had on the story. These heroes and villains may not have made it to the end of the road, but their lives weren't in vain - they stand as a fitting reminder that when you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die.

Perhaps best known for all the colorful insults his mother, Lady Olenna, used to describe him, Mace Tyrell was a simple but well-meaning lord who left the scheming to his family members. Mace was outsmarted by all of those around him: his hilarious and conniving mother, his manipulative and power-hungry daughter Margaery, and his vengeful, fierce son Loras.

Not that it helped them, in the end. All the Tyrells' combined smarts were no match for the force of crazy that is Cersei Lannister, and Mace proved to be a victim of her wrath more than any other named character on the show. Below, Roger Ashton-Griffiths recalls his dramatic demise in Part 11 of our retrospective series, "When I Died on Game of Thrones."

What do you remember about filming your death scene?

Who do you think will end up on the Iron Throne?

I should predicate this by saying that I have no knowledge of what the end is. If it happens to match mine, which I don't think it will, then it's entirely coincidental. But I would reflect on the fact that the world they have created is a-classical. We're in London - if you go out now, you'll see around you buildings that reflect Roman, Greek architecture all over the place. There's none of that in Westeros. There's not a single Greek column to be had. So I'm calling it an a-classical world, which effectively means that it was pre-classical. Because the classical world has permeated so much, so completely. If it's a pre-classical world, then where has it gone?

I'm going to suggest that the battle which is created between the living and the dead, the White Walkers and the humans, is so catastrophic that it effectively wipes out all of civilization. There'll be just a few stragglers who are left to go back to the stone age. And the destruction of Westeros and the world that it represents will come to be remembered in myth as Atlantis. And we are so many thousands of years back that the civilization is going to have to develop into the classical worlds, the Egyptian, the Greek, the Indian, the Tao. These are worlds which have yet to develop. So, I think there's going to be an Armageddon. If I were writing it, I would have no Iron Throne. I would have no one on it. It would all be over for humanity.

Who do you think deserves to end up on the Iron Throne?

Oh, god, do you think it could become a republic? Oh, crikey. It's an extraordinary thought, isn't it? People voting for in or out. Who's going to deserve it? I mean, all the lovely couples, Daenerys and Jon Snow. Everyone I think would expect them to get it - but I don't know. There's a line quite early in one of the scenes I was in, this small council meeting where they're talking about Daenerys and her dragons. And Charles Dance's character has a line which is something like, "Dragons haven't won a war in 300 years. Armies win them all the time." And it's brilliant in a number of ways. First, he deals with the whole issue of the supernatural, the sci-fi, the mythic in the story. It places this into context. This is actually a story about human beings and characters and the way politics plays out - incidentally, there's a bit of dragonry going on, but it's not the main thing. So, there's very clever lines. But reflecting on that suggests to me that if Daenerys and Jon Snow do win, it will have been because they've got the dragons and that's not going to make them popular with the people. And so I think if they get it, it could eventually, once the dragons have gone - and we do know they're vulnerable - once they're gone, I think there could be an uprising, which would result in the Republic of Westeros.

How would you like Mace to be remembered?

For more from our "When I Died on Game of Thrones" series, be sure to watch Julian Glover reflecting back on the unexpectedly long life of Maester Pycelle.

The actor who portrayed the doomed lord of Highgarden shares his memories of filming his death scene, his backstory, and his predictions for the end of the series. He also compares Westeros to a pre-classical world and wonders if there will be an Iron Throne or a republic.
