Roger of Lauria ( c. 1245 – 17 January 1305), was a Calabrian admiral in Aragonese service, who was the commander of the fleet of the Crown of Aragon during the War of the Sicilian Vespers. He was probably the most successful and talented naval tactician of the Middle Ages.

But none in all of the Middle Ages deserved the distinction ‘Admiral of Admirals’ in the sense of a supreme naval commander more than Roger of Lauria who fought for the Crown of Aragon during the War of the Sicilian Vespers in the late thirteenth century.
Roger of Lauria, the commander of the galley fleets of the Kingdom of Aragon in the last years of the thirteenth century, was portrayed as a great hero by many contemporary chroniclers of his exploits. He has also been much lauded by modern historians writing on the naval aspects of the War of the Sicilian Vespers.
