Rosalie Mackenzie Poe, née Rosalie Poe, was the estranged sister of Edgar Allan Poe. Rosalie, born approximately December 1810 in Norfolk, Virginia, was the last of Elizabeth Arnold Poe’s children ( Mabbott 520 ).
Rosalie appears to have led a relatively comfortable and stable existence in the Mackenzie home until the Civil War left the family destitute. Thereafter, her story becomes pure pitable tragedy. The remaining members of her foster family sent her to her Poe relatives in Baltimore.
Rosalie Poe outlived her brother Edgar by 25 years. She ended her days in the Epiphany Church Home in Washington, where she spent her last years soliciting money from prosperous people, representing herself as Poe's poverty-stricken sister.
