Aug 2, 2019 · Rose Hill is not the oldest cemetery in Macon but it is the largest at about 65 acres. In 1836, Macon was growing so a committee was named consisting of Simri Rose, Jerry Cowles, J. Williams, and Isaac Scott. They selected its location on the banks of the Ocmulgee River.
Rose Hill Cemetery, designed for the city of Macon in 1840 by Simri Rose, is one such example of a picturesque garden. In Georgia, where a fine heritage of garden history had long existed, the greatest aesthetic achievements in gardening were reached between 1820-61 during the Classical Revival.
About Rose Hill Preservation & Restoration. In 2019 a small group of Maconites began working together to promote, restore, and preserve Macon, Georgia’s beloved 50-acre Rose Hill Cemetery 1840. A formal 501C-3 nonprofit was created in 2021 and named “Rose Hill Preservation & Restoration, Inc”.
Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia was established in 1840 and is the burial place of numerous Southern persons of note, including several Confederate generals and Southern rock legends Duane Allman and Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers Band.
