Rosecliff isn't the most majestic of the Newport Rhode Island mansions, but it is still amazing. It's got some beautiful architecture, great history, and was the spot to party during the Gilded Age. NEWPORT – Rosecliff, one of Newport’s most famous Gilded Age mansions, is reopening to the public following an extensive $7.4 million renovation. “All the projects that were involved were necessary. If we hadn’t moved forward we could have lost this building,” said Trudy Coxe, CEO of the Preservation Society of Newport County.
Built for Mrs Hermann Oelrichs, an heiress of the Comstock Lode silver treasure, Rosecliff was designed by Stanford White to look like the Grand Trianon at Versailles, and its palatial ballroom (Newport's largest) and landscaped grounds quickly became the setting for some truly enormous parties. Houdini entertained at one.
