Apr 16, 2024 · A narrow squeak. In the 1870s, one woman artist, Elizabeth Butler, narrowly missed out on election as an Associate of the Royal Academy. Her Crimean War painting, The Roll Call, had caused a sensation at exhibition in 1874. It showed the stoic heroism of the ordinary soldier and struck a chord with all who saw it.
