Royal Street ( French: Rue Royale; Spanish: Calle Real) is a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S. It is one of the original streets of the city, dating from the early 18th century, and is known today for its antique shops, art galleries, and hotels.
A stroll down Royal Street, the crown jewel of New Orleans’ walking boulevards, is the perfect way to work off the city’s decadent food and drink. From a centrally located hotel like the New Orleans Marriott, walk a block and a half north on Canal and take a right on Royal to start your walking tour along the city’s most idyllic roadway.
With blocks and blocks of the strip dedicated to antique stores and art galleries, Royal Street is a sort of elegant 19th-century (and very long) outdoor shopping arcade. From 11 am to 4 pm, most of the street turns into a pedestrian-only mall.
