SALOME sə lō’ mǐ (Σαλώμη, G4897, peaceful). 1. One of the women who followed Jesus in Galilee and ministered to Him (Mark 15:40, 41). A comparison between Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40; 16:1, 2 identifies her as the wife of Zebedee, and therefore mother of James and John.
Who was Salome? Veiled dancer, 2nd century BC. Salome was Herod’s step-daughter. She danced at a banquet and asked for John the Baptist’s head as a reward. Herod Antipas gave in to her request. Was the whole thing planned beforehand as a way of getting rid of John? Or did Herod really did have an incestuous passion for his step-daughter? John died.
