Saline water (more commonly known as salt water) is water that contains a high concentration of dissolved salts (mainly sodium chloride ). On the United States Geological Survey (USGS) salinity scale, saline water is saltier than brackish water, but less salty than brine.
The concentration of salt in seawater (its salinity) is about 35 parts per thousand; in other words, about 3.5% of the weight of seawater comes from the dissolved salts. In a cubic mile of seawater, the weight of the salt (as sodium chloride) would be about 120 million tons.

Saltwater, on the other hand, is water that has high salinity, typically greater than 30 ppt. It is found in oceans, seas, and some saltwater lakes and wetlands. One of the main differences between freshwater and saltwater is their salinity. Salinity is the measure of the amount of dissolved salts in water.
