A qualified medical doctor, he was disturbed by several common medical practices of the era like bloodletting and purging which he believed worsened the symptoms of patients instead of treating them.
Samuel Hahnemann was a Swiss physician and translator who created the concept of homeopathy, a system of medicine based on the principle of "like cures like". He observed that quinine, a common treatment for malaria, had the same effect on healthy subjects as on diseased ones. He published his ideas in 1810 and practiced until his death in Paris.
