San Mateo is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States, on the San Francisco Peninsula. About 20 miles (32 km) south of San Francisco, the city borders Burlingame to the north, Hillsborough to the west, San Francisco Bay and Foster City to the east and Belmont to the south.

Early Explorers. In 1776, Spanish explorers came to today's San Mateo. During a scouting trip to locate a place to start a colony on the Peninsula, Lieutenant Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza, Padre Pedro Font, Lieutenant Jose Joaquin Moraga, and eleven soldiers set up camp in San Mateo.
With a little more than 100,000 residents, San Mateo is the most populous city in its namesake county and the perfect place to start exploring everything the peninsula offers. The compact downtown is a half-mile squared, served by a Caltrain station, and peppered with restaurants, cafes, and a range of shops.
