Sanatoriums were a hybrid between a hospital and a resort, built to maximise patients’ exposure to sunlight and clean air. Their bright, open spaces influenced both healthcare and modern architecture.
The first American sanatorium was built by Edward Livingstone Trudeau at Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks in 1885. Trudeau, like many of the early pioneers of the Sanatorium movement, was afflicted with tuberculosis, but believed he had cured himself of his symptoms after an extended stay in the mountains in the 1870s.

Dr. Trudeau was able to establish his Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium in 1884 through donations from friends. So the beginnings of the sanatorium movement in the United States started because of the need of a place where patients could get room and board, rather than a place where treatment could be given.
