It was there in a place that became known as Saul (this comes from the Irish for “Barn” – “Sabhall”) Monastery – that Patrick founded his first church – donated to him by a local chieftain. Nearby a local hill called Slieve Patrick houses a giant statue of Patrick.

Allegedly, Saint Patrick died in Saul Monastery on 17 March 461 and is buried in nearby Downpatrick. The modern "Saint Patrick's Memorial Church" is built on the reputed spot of this building and includes a replica round tower .
Saul Church. This site is known as the Cradle of Christianity in Ireland. Tradition holds that St Patrick and his companions landed at the mouth of the Slaney river, a few miles from here, in 432AD. Patrick encountered Dichu, the local chieftain, who gave him a barn for shelter.
