Scottish Power was first set up as a nationalised company in 1990 in preparation for the privatisation of the previously government-owned Scottish electricity industry. It was privatised in 1991, and in 1995 it bought MANWEB (Merseyside And North Wales Electricity Board) and merged it into the company.
