Our Story. The City of Sedalia, founded in October 1860, is located in west-central Missouri and is the seat of Pettis County. Sedalia, with easy access to Interstate 70, is located 90 miles east of Kansas City and 190 miles west of St. Louis.

Sedalia, city, seat of Pettis county, west-central Missouri, U.S., 75 miles (121 km) east-southeast of Kansas City. Established in 1857 by George R. Smith and originally named Sedville for his daughter Sarah (nicknamed Sed), it developed along the Missouri Pacific Railroad right-of-way.
Sedalia is a city located approximately 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of the Missouri River and, as the county seat of Pettis County, Missouri, United States, it is the principal city of the Sedalia Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 21,725.
