The Selimiye Mosque and its Social Complex in Edirne are considered the pinnacle of the career of the most famous Ottoman architect, Sinan. The mosque was built between 1569 and 1575 and owes its beauty to the symmetry of the building and the optimal lighting inside. It has a large dome surrounded by four 71-meter-high minarets.
Edirne, Türkiye. Selimiye Külliyesi is a mosque complex located at the center of the old city of Edirne, whose skyline it dominates even today. It is one of the last works of Mimar Sinan, the imperial architect to Ottoman sultans Süleyman, Selim II, and Murad III, constructed in 1568-1574/976-982 AH when the master builder was in his 80s.

Dec 1, 2021 · History of the Selimiye Mosque. Sultan Selim II of the Ottoman Empire commissioned the mosque in the mid-16th century. The empire’s main architect (mimar) at that time was Mimar Sinan. He already had loads of mosque building experience and Selimiye Mosque would become his crowning achievement after a lifetime of work.
Oct 24, 2019 · The Selimiye Mosque has one gigantic central dome supported by four half-domes resting on eight massive pillars. Each pillar has 12 sides. The dome is 31.28 meters (102 feet) in diameter and 42.25 meters (140 feet) high. Mimar Sinan claimed the dome was larger than that of Hagia Sophia, but that claim was false.
The Selimiye Mosque underwent restoration in 1954–71 and continues to function as a place of worship today. The madrasa to the southeast of the mosque is used as the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art of Edirne, while the school for traditions of the Prophet ( darülhadis) to the southwest, is no longer in use.
