Shīʿa Islam is the second-largest branch of Islam, followed by 10–15% of all Muslims. Although there are many Shīʿa subsects in the Muslim world, Twelver Shīʿīsm is by far the largest and most influential, comprising about 85% of all Shīʿa Muslims. Others include the Ismāʿīlī, Zaydī, and Alevi.
Twelver Shi’ah, the largest of the three groups of Shi’ah extant today. They believe that, after the death of Muhammad, the lineage of Ali was ordained to take over leadership of the Muslim community. They are unique among the Shi’ah in the belief that the 12th leader of Ali’s lineage continues to live in occultation.
